Armed forces
Once war broke out there were thousands of men who volunteered and enlisted to join the war. The way troops were drafted into the military was through the selective service act. The selective service act was a way of making sure that everyone (men) participated in the service. Most men in 1917 were drafted into war through a lottery. the soldiers who signed up for the selective service had to be between the age of 21 and 30. Most of the men drafted were sent to help the British and the French. Most of the soldiers joined the war because the war was thought as the war of all wars. Propaganda was what brought the soldiers to join the war.

African Americans who joined the war believed that if they were to fight on the same side as their country that they would get some credit and the racial tensions would go away. Even during the war African Americans were still facing racial tensions at their home country. Most of the soldiers teams were differentiated and were separated between each other. most of the African Americans were placed together. Some of the African american soldiers who tried to move in command were permitted to become officers, while most were not permitted.
Personal Reflection
Dear Mom,
Wow just got the news that my country would be joining the war. At first i thought that my country would remain neutral throughout the war. Once the news broke out that the Lusitania was torpedoed by German ships i was furious, furious that many american civilians on that ship lost their lives. I volunteered myself to join the war, i haven't told my wife yet because I'm afraid she will be angry and sad that i will leave. As of now i am still waiting for the U.S to call upon the troops who volunteered themselves. As i was handed my uniform i felt patriotic that i will be fighting for the peace of my country.
Now that i am officially going to go to the war I will fight along side of my comrades. i hope that we win the war. At our training centers I've seen African Americans be placed into peoples teams and even some of the soldiers teams were just African Americans. some of my team mates told me that they were selected through a lottery. Also since the war began and soldiers came to fight in the war, a lot of jobs have been opening. I have also seen immigrants migrate from their homeland to come to the U.S in search of a better life and jobs. I love you mom.
Love,
