Causes:
Arms Race 1940-1950's:
The arms race is one of the causes of why the U-2 Incident happened. At the time both the United States and the USSR were both in a standoff were both sides began creating a stock pile of weapons. If one side had more weapons the other side had to create twice as many weapons in case if the other were to try and attack the other country. The both countries were in a standoff in which war never broke out. This is a cause of the U-2 Incident because the United States was so eager to spy on the things the USSR was doing.

Truman Doctrine 1947:
The Truman doctrine was a document created by Harry S. Truman to provide economic, military aid to countries trying to maintain and create a democratic government. This was a strategy that the United States created for other countries because the United States felt that if they were to get into the war countries they had provided aid to would be on the United States side. this is a cause of the U-2 incident because the United States did not want any countries to be influenced by the USSR.

Brinkmanship 1940-1990's:
Brinkmanship is when dangerous events are pushed to the extreme. During the Cold War both countries the US and the USSR were constantly competing with each other to see who had the bigger advantage. This is what caused the U-2 incident because one country would have to spy on the other to see what the other country was planning.

Operation Overflight: A Memoir of the U-2 Incident June 1, 1970:
Shortly after his return from Russian hands, pilot Francis Gary Powers wrote a book. The book talked about his mission to spy on the USSR. He talks about what he experienced while he was in Russia. He wrote about how he was interrogated countless times by Russians. He also wrote about how at one point he was claimed as a traitor of his own country. This is an effect of the U-2 Incident because when the pilot wrote and published the book the people began to blame the CIA for the incident.
